School of
Communication at Loyola University Chicago Launches The Social &
Interactive Media Lab (SIMLab)
CHICAGO,
February 17, 2014 — The School of Communication at Loyola University
Chicago is pleased to officially launch its Social & Interactive Media Lab (SIMLab), an
interdisciplinary research environment dedicated to the in-depth study of
social phenomena between society and technology. The space will serve as a hub
for faculty
and advanced students to research and develop collaborative projects that help drive
the conversation on social issues in digital communication.
The SIMLab Open
House will be held on Friday, February 21, 2014 in Room 016 at Loyola
University Chicago’s School of Communication, 51 E. Pearson, Chicago. The event will
be held at 3:00p.m. to 5:00p.m. and will feature a Q&A session with guest
speaker André Brock, Assistant Professor at
the University of Michigan in Communication Studies. Brock’s work on analyzing
racial identity on the Internet and other digital technologies kicks off a
series of discussions on technology and society hosted by SIMLab.
In
addition to establishing a forum for critical conversation, SIMLab advances
high-impact research in digital communication through engagement with
cutting-edge technologies and practices. With several projects already being
developed, the
facility provides the space and resources for participants to conduct social
scientific research in communication, with major themes in social media,
advertising, journalism, games, and social justice in a digital era.
“Creating a space that considers society as part and parcel with
technological development is very exciting,” says Dr. Florence Chee,
Assistant Professor in the School of Communication at Loyola University
Chicago and Co-Founder of SIMLab. “We have a lot to learn from a
multitude of perspectives as we tackle the emerging challenges of a
digital era.”
Through engaged and collaborative learning, SIMLab
provides insights into our everyday interactions with culture and
technology, promoting discussion and debate while engaging with current
sociotechnical phenomena. SIMLab also promotes opportunities for
high-level professional development in digital communication through
cutting edge media, communication, computer and network facilities.
Located
in the heart of downtown Chicago on the Magnificent Mile, Loyola’s School of
Communication
provides an ideal setting for integrating
study with practical application in the expanding field of communication. For
